Our school is proud to be named after St Augustine of Canterbury, a man of deep faith, courage and dedication who played a vital role in bringing Christianity to England.
Sent by Pope Gregory the Great in the 6th century, St Augustine led a mission to share the message of God’s love. Through his perseverance, kindness and trust in God, he established the Church in Canterbury, becoming its first Archbishop. His work helped to spread the Christian faith across the country, even in the face of great challenges.
St Augustine’s life continues to inspire our school community today. Like him, we are called to grow in faith, show love to one another and use our gifts to serve others. His example encourages us to be brave, to believe in ourselves and to remain united in God’s love.
As a school that is “unique and united in God’s love,” we strive to follow St Augustine’s example by nurturing a caring and supportive environment where every child can flourish. We encourage all members of our community to develop confidence, embrace their individuality and “let their light shine” in everything they do.
The life of St Augustine of Canterbury calls us to live out key virtues that shape our school community:
- Faith – Trusting in God’s plan, just as St Augustine did when he journeyed into the unknown to share the Gospel.
- Courage – Showing bravery in new situations and standing up for what is right.
- Mission and Service – Using our gifts to help others and make a positive difference in the world.
- Perseverance – Continuing with hope and determination, even when things feel difficult.
- Unity – Bringing people together in God’s love, just as Augustine helped build the early Church in England.
These virtues help us to live out our mission to be “unique and united in God’s love” and to “let our light shine.”
Although few of St Augustine of Canterbury’s exact words were recorded, his life reflects a message that continues to guide us today:
“We are called to bring the light of Christ to others through our words and actions.”
(attributed to the mission of St Augustine of Canterbury)
Through his example, we are inspired to grow in faith, show love to one another, and confidently shine in our own unique ways.
