At St Augustine’s, we are committed to supporting the development of the whole child - academically, spiritually, emotionally and socially - in line with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
As part of this commitment, we teach Health, Relationships, and Sex Education (HRSE) in a way that is age-appropriate, inclusive and rooted in our Catholic values of dignity, respect and love.
What is HRSE?
HRSE helps children to:
- Develop healthy, respectful relationships
- Understand their own physical and emotional development
- Stay safe, both in the real world and online
- Grow in confidence, self-worth and awareness of others
Our curriculum is informed by:
- Statutory government guidance (DfE Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education)
- Catholic Education Service and diocesan guidance
- The PSHE Association Programme of Study and research-informed best practice
This ensures our teaching is both faithful to Catholic teaching and grounded in the latest educational research and guidance on children’s personal development and wellbeing.
What do we teach and when?
HRSE is delivered progressively from Reception through to Year 6. Content is carefully planned so that:
- Younger children focus on friendships, family life, emotions, respect and keeping safe
- Older pupils begin to learn about physical changes, emotional wellbeing and responsible relationships
- Learning builds over time so children are prepared for the next stage of their development
All content is taught in an age-appropriate, sensitive and respectful way.
How do we teach HRSE?
Lessons are delivered by trained staff in a safe, supportive environment where pupils feel comfortable to ask questions and share ideas.
We use:
- High-quality, carefully selected resources approved by the Diocese
- Teaching approaches recommended by the PSHE Association, including discussion, reflection and scenario-based learning
- Opportunities to link learning to Gospel values and Catholic social teaching
Our approach supports children to develop knowledge, but also important life skills such as communication, empathy and decision-making.
We recognise that parents are the primary educators of their children, and we aim to work closely in partnership with you.
Consultation with Parents
In line with diocesan expectations, statutory requirements and best practice guidance from the PSHE Association, we are currently undertaking a consultation with parents and carers about our HRSE provision.
This is an opportunity for you to:
- Review what your child will be taught
- Understand how and when different topics are delivered
- Ask questions and share your views
We value your feedback and want to ensure our approach reflects both high-quality educational practice and the needs of our school community.

If you would like to discuss any aspect of HRSE, please contact Mrs Roach or Mrs Goulding.
We value the importance of working in partnership with parents and carers. A consultation period is currently open, providing opportunity for any feedback, questions, or representations. This consultation will remain open until 31st July.
